On Thursday 6 November we went to a preview of Chicago (Adelphi Theatre) featuring Ruthie Henshall and Ute Lemper. The songs and dancing were great, with a breathtaking performance from both Ruthie and Ute. In our opinion the staging could be more attractive, although it was nice to have the orchestra on stage.
Friday evening 7 November we saw the London version of Beauty and the Beast (Dominion Theatre) for the first time. It was an exact copy of the Broadway performance we saw two years ago. As we already have the CD of the OBC in our collection, there was absolutely no need to buy the one of the OLC. There was just one minor change and that was the scene where Belle asks the Beast to dance with her and Lumi�re, Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts now "order" him with firm voices to dance with her, while in the New York version they gently suggest him to do so. Again we enjoyed the show very much.
On Saturday 8 november was the great moment for Anita to see Martin Guerre (Prince Edward Theatre) for the first time. She had heard so much about it from me, having seen the show twice, that she was very anxious to watch the scenes that belong to the songs she already knew from the CD. We were very glad to mention that the performance was completely sold out, so probably there will be a future for Martin Guerre in London. Jenna Russell was playing the role of Bertrande and Hal Fowler that of Arnaud Du Tilh. It was a great performance with very good singing and magnificent choreography. Most of the adaptions made to the show were improvements. The story was absolutely more logical than in the earlier versions. Although the singing of most performers was in my opinion better than in the previous cast, I must admit that I missed Rebecca Lock as Bertrande. Jenna's singing was fine but she misses the innocence and vulnerability of Rebecca. All by all we had a marvellous weekend!
